Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that enables individuals to have their skills and experience formally recognised by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).  RPL is ideal for individuals who have extensive experience in a particular sector but have not yet obtained formal qualifications.

RPL assesses an individual’s current knowledge and abilities, allowing them to receive credit or achieve formal qualifications based on their existing competencies. This recognition may support career progression or further educational opportunities.

What Evidence is required for RPL?

To demonstrate your eligibility for RPL, the following types of evidence may be required:

IMPORTANT:  all submitted evidence must be authentic and directly related to your own skills and experiences.

What support will be given to students during the RPL process?

  • METS is committed to providing support throughout the RPL process.
  • Trainers and assessors will guide you through the entire RPL process, offering advice on assessment procedures and assisting with identifying the necessary evidence.
  • METS will consider your literacy levels, cultural backgrounds, and prior educational experiences to ensure assessments are fair and accessible.
  • You will have access to a variety of assessment methods to demonstrate your skills and meet the required outcomes.
  • METS cannot decide which units you should apply for the RPL, however, we will provide assistance and advice to assist you throughout the process.

METS’ goal is to ensure you feel confident and supported as you work towards achieving your qualification through RPL.

When should I apply for RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for learners to apply before enrolment and at any time during their training. While it is recommended that learners determine if they will apply for RPL before starting their course, METS acknowledges that this may not always be practical. If a learner identifies an opportunity for RPL partway through the course, METS will make every effort to accommodate their application.

What now?

If you are interested in applying for RPL or would like to discuss this option further, we encourage you to contact METS Training Services. Our team will provide you with detailed information about the RPL process and guide you through the necessary steps.

To begin the RPL application process, you will first need to complete an RPL Pre-Assessment. This initial step is designed to evaluate your prior learning, skills, and experience to determine if they meet the requirements for RPL. The Pre-Assessment ensures that your application is suitable and helps identify the areas where your existing competencies align with the course outcomes.

We are here to support you at every stage of the RPL journey and look forward to assisting you in making the most of your prior learning and experience.
