Traineeships

A traineeship is on-the-job training with an employer, while you study and get paid. It is similar to an apprenticeship – where you work under a supervisor who will mentor and ensure you learn all the right skills.
It’s perfect if you want to get a professional, industry-led qualification at the same time as real-world work experience.

At the end of your training, you will receive a nationally recognised qualification, a Certificate II, Certificate III or Diploma. A traineeship can run over one or two years and can be full-time or part-time.

There are a few options for trainees:

  • A New Entrant Traineeship is available to anyone within the first 3 months of commencing full time employment with an employer. They may also qualify if they are within the first 12 months of a part-time employment arrangement or within 3 months of completing a pre-requisite qualification. Like any traineeship, your trainee will gain on the job experience whilst completing a qualification and will receive support and feedback throughout the duration of their studies.
  • An Existing Worker Traineeship is great way to upskill and develop your workforce. Through structured on the job learning, your team will deepen and broaden their workplace skills and knowledge and get a nationally recognised qualification. An Existing Worker is an employee who has already been working for you for more than three months at full time equivalent. A ‘full time equivalent’ could be based on part time, casual or full time work; and approved leave is included in the time calculation. Like any traineeship, your employee will gain on the job experience whilst completing a qualification and will receive support and feedback from both you and METS throughout the duration of their studies. However, unlike New Entrant Traineeships, the NSW State Government does not fund Existing Worker Traineeships and therefore we must invoice the employer, to cover the training costs. In most cases, incentives an employer will receive from the Commonwealth Government will offset these costs. *Eligibility Criteria applies to both funding and Traineeships. • School Based Traineeships (SBAT) provide Learners the opportunity to complete a Nationally Recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) Qualification while completing their Higher School Certificate (HSC). SBATs are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students in NSW and provide the opportunity to learn and earn. Learners are supported by their employer and RTO to be flexible with their HSC curriculum. METS offer SBAT Traineeships for • SIR20216 Certificate II in Retail Services • SIR30216 Certificate III in Retail • CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

Learners that are not eligible for Traineeships can enrol into the following training options;

  • RPL (Experience workers only) Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process used to evaluate an individual’s existing skills and knowledge to determine if they meet the criteria for a specific training course or qualification. This assessment can be based on formal, informal, or non-formal learning experiences. RPL allows individuals to leverage their past learning to gain qualifications more efficiently, saving both time and money. Our RPL courses can be completed within 6 – 10 weeks ( hours can range from 2 – 4 hours per week dependant on qualification) Our experienced RPL trainers work closely with learners and employers to ensure a streamlined and positive experience.

  • Self-Paced Learning
    Self-Paced Learning is offered to eligible Learners through a Fee for Service model who wish to complete the course within their own time.
    They will have ongoing trainer support, without the additional requirements of a Traineeship. Depending on the industry/ qualification, trainers will still be required to complete observation tasks to deem the assessments competent
    Smart and Skilled Government funding may be available. Contact the METS office for more information on 02 9838 0567

  • Skill Sets
    Skills sets are designed for anyone who are wanting to upskill but not complete a full qualification course. A skill set is a single unit of competency or combination of units of competency from one or more training packages that link to a licence or regulatory requirement, or defined industry need. This generally will take a short time frame to complete the course and can save money. The learner will receive a Statement of Attainment on completion, and can Credit Transfer the units to a Full qualification if they choose to further their education.
