From Chef to Champion Educator

Andrew Hudson Wins 2025 NSW Vocational Student of the Year

We’re thrilled to celebrate one of our standout learners – Andrew Hudson, who has been awarded the prestigious title of 2025 NSW Vocational Student of the Year for Western Sydney & Blue Mountain Region. His inspiring career transformation, deep community impact, and commitment to lifelong learning are a powerful reminder of what’s possible through vocational education.

A Journey Sparked by Change

Andrew’s path into early childhood education began with unexpected change. After working as a chef for over a decade, the COVID-19 pandemic closed the doors of his restaurant. Seeking a new direction, he found work as a cook at a childcare centre, and something clicked.

What started as a job soon became a calling. Inspired by the joy of working with children, Andrew enrolled with METS to study the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. From there, his passion grew, leading him to take on leadership roles and eventually begin his Diploma qualification.

From Learner to Leader

In just a few years, Andrew has progressed from kitchen to classroom to Coordinator of Blackheath Out of School Hours (BOOSH). His leadership has made a tangible difference in the lives of children and families. He was instrumental in expanding BOOSH’s licence to accommodate more families, a significant milestone for the local community.

His creative programming often blends his culinary background with child-led learning experiences. Whether designing vacation care programs or helping children explore their emotions through art, Andrew is always focused on creating inclusive, nurturing spaces for kids to grow.

Balancing Study, Work and Family

Throughout his studies, Andrew has balanced full-time work and family life, raising three children while completing his Diploma. Even when facing personal challenges, including his wife’s recent illness, he continued to lead his centre and stay committed to his education.

His story is a powerful reminder that learning doesn’t stop when life gets busy. With support from his trainer and family, Andrew has shown what’s possible when resilience and passion come together.

Why Not You?

If you’ve ever thought about making a change in your career or starting fresh with something that inspires you, Andrew’s story is proof that it’s never too late. Vocational education can open the door to opportunities you might never have imagined.

Whether you’re returning to study, switching industries, or building on your existing skills, METS is here to support you every step of the way. Like Andrew, you can turn passion into purpose and make a real difference in the lives of others.

Congratulations, Andrew!
